Bill Philpot
The posters displayed in this site are the original concept, design and illustration of artist Bill Philpot. After leaving school Bill pursued a long and highly successful career as a commercial artist working in London. Here he worked on many of the British advertising industry’s major award-winning campaigns for such brands as VW, Audi, Levis and Marlborough. But now he has turned his attention back to subjects which he finds more challenging.
Bill has long been a student and admirer of the graphics and typography of that wonderfully creative period of the nineteen twenties and thirties that became known as Art Deco. In particular he favoured the work of the great poster designers like A. M. Cassandre, Charles Loupot and George Hamel (Geo Ham) in Europe, along with Edward McKnight Kauffer, Frank Newbould and Tom Purvis in England.

In the late nineteen-eighties, Bill was commissioned by Christies Auction House to produce a series of posters for sales of their classic cars in London and Monaco. This included that of the Bugatti Royale which sold for a record figure of £5,500,000. These posters, based on the graphic styles of the Art Deco period, have since become classics in their own right and are currently selling for quite considerable sums on the internet. It was this work that kickstarted a career ‘retrospectively commissioning himself’ to produce posters of his own creation that he might, in some parallel universe, have been asked to compose.

Now working from his studio at home in Suffolk, England, Bill’s posters are the result of a very productive period of work for him. The satisfaction gained from crafting the compositions along with integrating text and illustration is immense, and we hope that you enjoy them.

We firmly believe that our beautifully crafted and finely reproduced posters will become classics of the future. It is our intention to continually expand our range of poster designs on a regular basis.
