This art deco Monaco poster features the 1936 Delahaye 135S, designed and built by Jean François to bring the ailing Delahaye company into motorsport for the first time. The company built its own factory team in 1936, and their first real success came at the three hours of Marseilles where the 135 Specials took the top six places. This was followed a month later by placing second, third, fourth and fifth in the French Grand Prix at Montlhèry, and third place at Spa. The following year the team took places at Le Mans, Mille Miglia and Monte Carlo, justifying the decision to compete in motorsport.
In this new Delahaye poster we invoke the elegant romance of Monaco with the car approaching Monte Carlo above the Mediterranean.
This poster is an adaptation of one of the illustrations created by Bill Philpot for the Johnnie Walker “Gentleman’s Wager” commercial starring Jude Law. The story of that commission can be found here.
